Welcome to the Faculty of Psychology and Pedagogics!

General information

Gomel is known as a place, where one of the founders of modern psychology – Lev Vigotsky lived, studied and started his research and teaching career.

The Faculty of  Psychology and Pedagogics, which continues the best traditions of Vigotsky  was created in 1991 and was first named “The Faculty of Psychology and Pre-University Training”. On February 1, 2010 the faculty was renamed into ‘The Faculty of Psychology and Pedagogics”.

The graduates of the faculty work in educational sphere (secondary schools, colleges, universities, social and psychological centers), healthcare (hospitals, policlinics), Social care, departments of the  Ministry of Internal Affairs and Ministry for Emergency situations offices and other public and commercial organizations.

The Faculty provides opportunities for learning and professional development. A wide range of programmes is offered - from undergraduate degrees, to Masters level qualifications and PhDs.

The faculty provides training on following specialties:

Undergraduate (Bachelor degree) courses:

-Psychology (Specializations: Pedagogical Psychology; Psychology of Sport; Social Psychology, Psychology of family relations)

-Social-Pedagogical and Psychological education

-Social Work and consultancy

Graduate  (Master degree)  courses: 

-Psychology (profile – social psychology and general psychology);

-Social-Pedagogical and Psychological education (profile - General Pedagogics; History of Pedagogics and Education)

The training is provided in Russian, Belarussian and English languages.

Training for Bachelor’s (undergraduate) degree usually lasts 4 years full-time and 5 years part-time.

The Masters degree (MA) is usually  one-two year full-time (part-time) degree which aims to provide a grounding in educational and psychological research methods and theoretical and methodological understanding of the field of education and psychology through one of the  specialist routes: Master in Psychology and Master in Social-Pedagogical and Psychological education (profile - General Pedagogics; History of Pedagogics and Education). The research is available in the field of social, medical, educational, sport, cognitive, family psychology, child development and education, comparative and international education, learning and technology, higher education, research design and methodology.

The PhD in Psychology and PhD in Pedagogics (Education) are  full-time or part-time  programmes which take 3-4 years and which are intended to provide graduates with a wide range of research skills as well as in-depth knowledge, understanding and expertise in their chosen field of research.  PhD students are attached to the department, researching a wide range of topics, normally linked to one or more of the Department Research Groups. Students come from different countries and are supported by a variety of scholarships and grants. Entry is highly competitive, and applicants are required to have a strong academic background and to submit a research proposal.

 

 


The students and the teachers of the faculty are highly involved into voluntary activities carried out by local, national and international organizations. Much attention in these projects is paid to the help and support of children in need and their families. That is why these activities became one of the most important parts of students’ training.

The Faculty of Psychology and Pedagogics is one of the largest centres for the study of psychology and social pedagogics in Gomel Region and Belarus.

Today more than 350 undergraduate and  graduate students are trained here  full-time and more than 400 students part-time. 

We have nearly 40 highly-qualified academic faculty. Structurally the Faculty includes 3 departments:

The Department of Pedagogics

The Department of Psychology

The Department of Social and Pedagogical Psychology

The faculty also includes 7 off-campus branches opened at educational and health-care establishments: Gomel State Gymnasium №10, Lev Vigotsky Gomel State Pedagogical College, Gomel Regional Center for Hygiene, Gomel City State Social and Pedagogical Center, Gomel Regional Center for correctional education,  rehabilitation and inclusion.

Science and Research

The faculty carries research in the following areas:

- Ideological, moral and spiritual self-development as the basis for the formation of social competence of pupils and students;

- Methodological education of students of humanitarian sphere;

- Social and pedagogical foundations of moral education of the students;

- Social and moral mechanisms of the ontogeny of morality in adolescence;

- Social and psychological determinants of psychological well-being;

- Experience of the individual in the dynamics of social development situation;

- A model of psychosocial support to adults and children of alcoholics.

 

 

 

Faculty pays much attention not only to theoretical but also to practical training. There are 5  research laboratories. Based on these labs, researchers and students conduct their research; learn modern methods of psychodiagnostics, educational and correctional work, implement a number of volunteer projects, prepare papers for publications. Student's Scientific Research Laboratory "Alliance" twice won the Special Presidential Award (in 2003 and 2010).

The Faculty organizes and carries regular international conferences on the problems of psychology and Pedagogics. 

 

International Cooperation

The faculty takes an active part in the international programs of cooperation.

The main foreign partners of the faculty are: The Bologna University (Italy); The University of Florence (Italy);  The St. Clement of Ohrid University of Sofia (Bulgaria); L. Vigotsky Institute of Russian State Humanitarian University (Russia); A. Gertsen Russian State Pedagogical University (Russia);  Institute of Practical Psychology (Russia); The University of Alicante (Spain), The Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain), Karlsruhe Technological University (Germany), Lund University Turku (Finland), Moscow city university (Russia), Ushinsky State Pedagogical University (Ukraine), State Pedagogical  University (Moldova) and other.

Among one of the most interesting cross-cultural projects is the study of social and psychological factors determining the psychological well-being of youngsters living in different European countries. The project connected with dance therapy and art therapy is carried in cooperation with the research laboratory of The University of Parma.

 

The cooperation with Italian institutions of higher education gave an opportunity to start a new project in clown-therapy in 2009, which helps to cure children with chronic diseases at hospitals.

The main step in developing international university cooperation is the project “Teaching and Learning Psychology in Higher Education”. In the framework of the project our faculty and the faculty of psychology of the University of Florence regularly exchange teachers, researchers and students. Our universities together also carry out international conferences on the problems of psychology and education.

Today the faculty takes part in a number of international projects: TEMPUS:  Eastern Partnership in Pedagogical Innovations in Inclusive Education; ERASMUS+  Fostering Competencies Development in Belarusian Higher Education; ERASMUS+ Fostering Competencies Development in Belarusian Higher Education; ERASMUS+ Introducing modules on law and rights in programmes of teacher training and educational sciences: A contribution to building rights-based education systems in countries in transition;  ITEC (Indian technical cooperation programme); Programmes of Child Fund International, The Pestalozzi program of the Council of Europe and other. We regularly  invite World leading professors to teach our students and conduct research together with our researchers.

Our teachers and students attend training programs in different countries on a regular bases.

International students from China, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Russia and other countries enjoy calm and quiet way of life, kindness of Belarussian people and high quality of education at Belarussian higher educational institutions.

Ian Shivei from Harbin (China) came to our country as an international exchange student. She studied Russian language, graduated from the Master’s program and took the position of lecturer at the department of Russian language. In her research Ian Shivei studies the problem of education in the Chinese family and compares education in Chinese and Belarussian families. She also takes part in multicultural projects connected with the study of Chinese language and culture. 

Dursun Hamraeva from Turkmenistan became one of the best students of the faculty. After graduating the university she plans to stay in Belarus. 

Sun Youan from China studied the Master’s course in General and comparative Pedagogics. 

Chen Lu. Director of the International Training and Consulting Company "Beijing Hongzhou Vending" (People's Republic of China). In the 2020-2021 academic year, she completed training in an English-language master’s program in the specialty “Theory and Methods of Teaching and Education.”

Akyeva Nyazik, a master’s student at the Faculty of Pedagogics and Psychology at Francisk Skorina Gomel State University, came to the city of Gomel to study from Turkmenistan. “From the first days I was pleasantly surprised and pleased by the friendliness, hospitality and dedicated work of the employees”.

Safaraliyev Razi Aliaga oglu, a master's student from Azerbaijan, studied at the faculty for master  degree in Psychology. The scientific supervisor was Associate Professor of the Department of Social and Educational Psychology, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences N.I. Koltysheva. The master's thesis was  devoted to the study of personal psychological characteristics of employees of the judiciary of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

 

Application procedure

 To get the invitation for the study in the Republic of Belarus, an applicant should produce the following documents to the International Affairs Department (sent by post, fax, e-mail):
- The completed application form
The photocopy of the certificate of education with the grades (marks) translated into Russian or English.
The photocopy of the passport, the certificate of birth or any other document confirming the personality.

On entering the University the following documents should be produced:
The application with the name of the chosen specialty.
The certificate of the education (original) with the grades (marks) translated into Russian or English.
The medical certificate given by the country of residence that verifies the absence of medical contraindications for studying in the Republic of Belarus.
The certificate of the test on antibodies to HIV.
The passport with the entering visa to the Republic of Belarus or valid registration (if there is any), the migration card.
6 photographs (size 4×6).
When arriving to the country the applicant should foresee the following expenses:

 - The additional medical check-up at the policlinics № 6 – $ 75;
- The obligatory medical insurance for one year – 85 EUR / 125 $;
- The registration at the Citizenship and Migration Department – $ 65;
- The cost of living in the hostel (per month) – $ 25;
- The visa for the trip to the country of residence during the vacations – $52.

The course fee is approximately 2000-3500 USD per year depending on the level  of studies.

The faculty carries out several local, regional and international projects connected with building well-being and life safety of children and adults. The main projects are:

     The project “Life safety in emergency situations, health protection and care of growing generation” is carried in cooperation with Gomel Regional Office of the ministry of Emergency Situations  the staff, students of Gomel State University, teachers and students of Gomel secondary schools. The  main aims of the project are: 1. Formation and  development of personal culture in emergency situations, providing self-security, public security and state security. 2. Formation and development of professionally meaningful qualities of the people, working in the sphere of life safety, their competence and eggheadism. 3. Building necessary knowledge, abilities, skills and experience of personal activity in emergency situations.

     The project “Psychological assistance in children’ palliative” is carried by the department of social and pedagogical psychology together with Belarussian children hospice.  The program started in 2010 and since that time  the specialists helped more than 50 families with disabled children. Today more than 30 families are assisted by our volunteers-students.             

     The project “Psychological assistance of children at hospitals”  is carried by scientists, teachers and students of the faculty in cooperation with Italian volunteer organization «LEGAMBIENTE», Gomel regional hospital, Gomel centre of social assistance of families and children. Students use different psychological techniques: art-therapy, origami, doll-therapy, clown-therapy, musical therapy. The specialists of the faculty consult parents and  develop strategies of interaction with parents and children.

     The project “Pedagogical support of youngsters from alcoholic families” deals with developing necessary strategies of interaction with children from alcoholic families, building strategies of preventive measures, works closely with  teachers, children and parents.

      The project “Equal teaches equal”  has been working since October 2005. The aim of the project is the popularization of the ideas, connected with healthy way of life among students of Universities and high school students and training volunteers-students from the faculty.
